Eyes on Japan: This collage is layered on a vintage c. 1920s photograph taken by the JJ Fein Studios in Chicago; only the woman’s eyes are visible. The base of this collage is a century-old background of a French print titled “The countryside around San Remo.” The map of Asia/Japan and the inset legend dates from 1885. The black swirl is from a vintage watercolor from Kyoto, with the dancing women from old rice paper napkins. The blue border script is from a 19th century Japanese business ledger, with the darker Japanese paper at the bottom having to do with theatre, the woman on the lower right from an old Japanese magazine, and the far lower corner made from modern altered paper.
